Note from the President: Bitter sweet news out of the State Department. For those of us passionate about the International Affairs Budget, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has been a major disappointment. During his brief time at the State Department, more than 60 percent of the organization’s top personnel have left the agency. Imagine if 60 percent of the military’s 4-star General’s left the military in one year! Needless to say, I’m personally glad his tenure is over. But what’s next? This is where things get interesting.
The President’s new pick Mike Pompeo would not be my first choice for Secretary of State… or my 800th. During his time in Congress, Pompeo did little to advocate for the world’s poor and the International Affairs Budget. We’ll get a better sense of his views during his confirmation hearing, but keep in mind that Congress holds all of the power when it comes to funding the programs we care about. Your work is more important than ever! Last year we saw the President’s proposed 30 percent cuts to the International Affairs Budget get shot down in Congress. Emails, mobilizing others to email and in-district Congressional meetings are crucial right now for keeping the pressure on Members of Congress and preventing cuts to programs that help the world’s poor.

Forbes recently published a story that utilized a Borgen Project article written by Sarah Prellwitz of Idaho. We see this happen frequently, where a major news site references an article written by our Content Team members. Keep up the great writing! You never know who is reading your article.
We recently learned that the sponsors of the Economic Growth and Development Act will be introducing a larger bill that incorporates the EGDA while tackling more issues. This will ultimately be a good thing, but in the short-term, we’re going to scale back our advocacy efforts around EGDA. Look for the news on the new bill in 2-3 weeks.

Note from the President: What a year everyone! The complete numbers will be out in January, but 2017 has set records in just about every category: more political access/lobbying meetings than ever, more leaders being contacted by constituents about poverty-reduction bills, more visitors to the website. The list goes on but the end result is that you’ve built a poverty-reduction movement that is stronger than ever and growing incredibly fast. I want to give a special shout-out to everyone who made sure all members of Congress were contacted by constituents in support of poverty-reduction legislation this year. In the past, the House of Reps, with 435 members representing districts ranging from rural farmland to a couple of miles in a major city, has been very difficult to reach comprehensively. This year, we pulled it off with every single member of the House of Representatives being emailed by voters in their district. If you emailed your leaders and/or mobilized others you were part of this effort. I can’t thank everyone enough for giving a voice to the world’s poor and making sure powerful leaders feel pressure to do more.

Congressman Yoho was first elected in 2012 and is currently serving his third term in the House of Representatives. He is also the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific. According to his bio, Congressman Yoho’s “approach to government is guided by constitutional principles, limited government, fiscal conservatism, personal responsibility, and free enterprise.” In the past, he was not a supporter of foreign aid. His views on this issue seem to have changed and he is the original sponsor of H.R.2747 Economic Growth and Development Act. This bill was introduced into the House in May 2017 and currently has the bipartisan support of 23 co-sponsors – 14 Republicans and 9 Democrats.
Here is an excerpt from a forthcoming article by Nina about the foreign aid budget, which includes directs quotes taken from her meeting with Congressman Yoho.
In response to the proposed budget cuts and these growing concerns, Rep. Ted Yoho introduced the Economic Growth and Development Act (H.R. 2747). This legislation will create an interagency mechanism that will open up U.S. foreign assistance funding to the private sector. This interagency mechanism proposed in this legislation will also increase efficiency in planning and coordinating with the donor-recipient countries in order to pursue long-term economic improvements. Moreover, it will require an annual report to be submitted by the President that will evaluate the effectiveness of the interagency foreign assistance programs. After speaking with Rep. Ted Yoho of Florida himself, he stated that “we are going through tough fiscal times as a nation and we need to make sure that [foreign] aid is used effectively”. Although Rep. Yoho had initially wanted to eliminate the foreign aid budget due to previous inefficiencies, he stated that “it is important to use the money invested [in order] to create stronger relationships with countries that can potentially become U.S. trading partners”. Rep. Yoho, along with many other leaders, recognize that targeted foreign aid focused on key developmental issues can be mutually beneficial for the U.S. and aid recipient countries.

Note from the President: I’m loving the Summer 2017 stats! Lobbying, advocacy emails, articles, fundraising… the list goes on, but we’re seeing record or near-record numbers across multiple areas of our work. August is a crucial month for advocacy. Members of Congress are home for the month and you have lots of opportunities to attend events where they’re speaking or secure lobbying meetings. Members of Congress are known to go home in August with one view on a bill or issue and return to D.C. in September with a completely different stance. Take advantage of this “mind-changing” month and give them the incentive to focus on extreme poverty. Get your Bird-Dog on and orchestrate public pressure. As one Senator told me, he rarely goes to a town hall where someone doesn’t speak out against foreign aid. We need to change that. The majority of Americans care about the world’s poor and we need to make sure Congress is hearing from those people.

I was invited to attend the Ohio Republican Party State Dinner on July 22, 2017. Hundreds of leaders and activists from all around Ohio, came out to support not only the continued growth of the Republican Party, but also the future prosperity of this country. The evening started off with an introduction by the chairperson of the Ohio Republican Party. She was followed by our very own U.S. Senator Rob Portman, who was given the honor of introducing the featured guest, Vice President Mike Pence. He gave a very passionate and uplifting address, and many displays of joy and appreciation could be seen and heard throughout his entire speech. As the dinner commenced, there was an award ceremony and then a section designated to the Republican candidates for governor of Ohio. They were each given time to briefly explain their positions and why they would be the best fit; and while I already know who I am voting for, it was still great to hear all of the positive things they have already accomplished, and what they have planned for this great state going forward. There were appearances by Senator Kevin Bacon, State Auditor Dave Yost, Attorney General Mike DeWine (who I had met previously), Congressman Jim Renacci, my U.S. Representative Warren Davidson (in terms of ‘dual citizen’) and so many more! It was an honor to be able to be a part of such an incredible event.

The Borgen Project LIVE!
[hr_invisible]
PR/Marketing team member, Maggie Carrig, hosted a Snapchat Takeover to raise awareness about her internship with The Borgen Project.
I took over University at Buffalo’s Snapchat for a day to talk about The Borgen Project in Buffalo, New York. I worked with the communications staff at The University at Buffalo to discuss my Marketing and Public Relations Internship. The university gives its students and faculty the opportunity to show the community how they are spending the summer and how it makes their school great. It was a great opportunity to reach a lot of students in a short amount of time. The Snapchat story that I created was viewed by roughly 1,600 students. Several students even took screenshots of a link I posted to email Congress to support current legislation. This was a new way to make people aware of how simple it is for anyone to get involved and make a change. I also emphasized how great this internship was because you can work from anywhere and it gives the campaign a greater chance of reaching all types of people.
[hr_invisible]
Tom Pandolfo, Political Affairs team member, livestreamed a Facebook concert as his final fundraising event. Anyone that donated or called/emailed their representatives was able to request a song for him to play. For donors that contributed $100, Tom wrote personalized songs for them and performed the songs live during the concert. Tom also demonstrated for his concert-viewers how easy it is to call Congress. This screenshot is of Tom leaving a voicemail for Senator Marie Cantwell of Washington state.

Note from the President: One of the most rewarding aspects of running The Borgen Project is seeing the impact our volunteers are having across the country. Nowhere is that impact more noticeable than in my meetings with congressional offices back in D.C.
In May, I was on Capitol Hill with several team members and in meeting after meeting, congressional staffers commented that they hear a lot from The Borgen Project supporters in their district. Those generic emails and calls to congressional offices all matter and are tracked inside congressional offices. Not for the first time, two Senate offices even said that they hear more from The Borgen Project supporters than any other group! That is absolutely phenomenal considering the grassroots influence of the AARP, NRA, Sierra Club and countless other advocacy organizations.
There is one huge difference, however, between us and the other politically influential groups: funding. While those organizations have tens of millions of dollars to work with, The Borgen Project’s total budget last year was less than $240,000!
We take great pride in being a “force multiplier” for every dollar donated. We believe one dollar can have the impact of $100 if you find creative ways to utilize it. To put in perspective the impact that every fundraising campaign and dollar donated has at The Borgen Project, you need look no further than to Clayton Haglund of Irvine, CA. Clayton raised $2,300, which was one percent of The Borgen Project’s entire budget last year. Clayton has a one-percent ownership of everything The Borgen Project accomplished last year. He fueled one percent of the effort that:
Passed three bills in Congress, impacting hundreds of millions of people.
Drove 2.4 million people to borgenproject.org.
Led to lobbying meetings with 93 percent of the Senate.
Built a network of volunteers in 532 cities.
The list goes on, but the point is quite simple: every dollar counts, every personal fundraising campaign counts and every person in The Borgen Project system has the ability to hold leaders accountable and change lives.

2017 D.C. Lobbying Trip Experience
Winners of this year’s lobbying trip contest share their biggest takeaways from the experience.
Ally Klemp and Emily Schwartz, Regional Directors, pose in front of the Capitol during the 2017 D.C. Lobbying Trip.
Nate Fowler, Political Affairs team member, and one of the 2017 D.C. lobbying trip contest winners.
Emily Schwartz:Even though our trip was important and got The Borgen Project and the issue of poverty in front of a lot of people, my biggest takeaway was that our lobbying efforts that week were not nearly as valuable as constituent calls and emails. Many offices remarked that when they hear support for these issues from their constituents, they are more likely to co-sponsor them. It was so interesting to hear directly from Congress that the people’s opinions matter. When Congressional staffers and interns are fielding calls from concerned constituents all day, they can’t help but remember the major issues. So, if The Borgen Project can get more and more people contacting their Congressional leaders, it will have a huge impact. I also learned that if we mention our Congressional leaders by name in our letters and published pieces, those pieces will get more attention from the leaders. And, if we can persuade big names (heads of Chamber of Commerce, CEOs of companies, etc.) to write letters to the editor about this issue, that will likely be noticed by leaders.
Nate Fowler:Advocating on behalf a citizen-fueled organization like The Borgen Project made me reflect on the influence that Americans have over our government. While this viewpoint has been diluted by the billions spent on campaign ads and backroom lobbyists, this organization’s record and the attention we were given during this trip, allude to the reality that when we dedicate ourselves to being heard by our nation’s government for the betterment of our world, we are. This was a humbling experience, not because of how powerful I realized a Senator is, but because it made me realize how powerful I could be in guiding their actions.
